Intensive Polish Language and Culture Course for Beginners

The course is aimed at individuals starting their adventure with Polish, e.g. exchange students planning to spend a semester in Poland or language enthusiasts. It is focused on the acquisition of the basic language competences including speaking, listening, reading and writing. The goal for students is to complete CEFR A1 level, which ensures communication in everyday situations with commonly-used expressions and elementary vocabulary. The program also includes classes on Polish culture and history as well as thematically aligned field trips.

Introduction to the Arabic Language and Culture

The course is aimed at individuals interested in international relations with a particular emphasis on the current situation in the Middle East and North Africa. The main objective of the course is to help learners understand the culture through the language. They will learn the alphabet and basic expressions as well as discover an Arabic way of life by analyzing cross-cultural differences and similarities. Upon the completion of the program, they will be able to maintain a basic conversation in Arabic. Moreover, they will be aware of the cultural code and see the region from a much wider perspective.

Public Speaking Workshop: from theory to practice

The main objective of the course is to help future professionals who would like to improve their public speaking skills. After determining what effective communication is, participants will discuss strategies useful in overcoming monotony and learn techniques one can apply to deal with stage fright. They will also cover the aspects of both verbal and non-verbal communication focusing on body language and building credibility. Upon the completion of the course, participant will have trained concentration and memory and they will have learned to react properly when talking to a hostile audience.

Intercultural communication

The course introduces students to the phenomenon of culture in the broad sense of the term. There are discussed both a social and a business context as well as a media-driven background. Fundamental theoretical and methodological basis of cross cultural communication are studied to demonstrate the challenges of dealing with cultures and identities in all of their complexity. Students will learn how to approach intercultural problems and challenges and how to deal with them or successfully resolve. It is expected that, as a result of the course, students' level of cultural intelligence and awareness will significantly increase.

Interpersonal communication and social interactions

The purpose of the course is to explore the field of ideas relating to human modes of communication and personal relationships in the social environment. It doesn’t focus on developing a particular communication skills, but to explore the structures that influence interpersonal interactions. There are discussions about factors easing and disturbing communication as well as specific types of communication in particular social groups, like: youth groups, groups connected by hobby, occupation, religion, gender etc. This course encourages students to spend time consciously examining interpersonal communication in order to identify communication behaviors that are productive and not productive to effective and appropriate communication.

World and Language of Subcultures

The course introduces students to the phenomenon of a special bond created between the members of various subcultures and the language they  use. Special jargon expressions have many functions associated with:  connecting members of particular social group and, on the other hand, distinguishing them from another groups, interpreting the reality they live in, making their communication process easy etc. It is also a factor allowing them to stand out from the crowd. There are different subcultures discussed during the course. These subcultures are, among others: football hooligans subculture, heavy metal subculture, biker subculture, prison and gang subcultures etc. The purpose of the course is to demonstrate students the reasons people want to create small communities or join them, as well as to show specific characteristics of each of them with a special reference to the jargon expressions they use in their everyday communication.
